Utah Honeymoon

Light beems down from high above into Peak-a-Boo gulch. The flowing curves of the canyon create the impression that the walls have a life of their own.

Dragon's Lair
Ok maybe this Spiney Lizard is a bit small to be a dragon but he still looks like he might want to eat me.

Path of the Water
Boulders pile up in the narrow slot canyon during flash floods. A moderate amount of climbing is often required in order to traverse these trails.

Warning Signs
Climbing over a large boulder we come upon a startling scene A dead rabbit lays below a boulder inhabited by two young rattle snakes and a very large spider. The rabbit is hard to see in this image but I bet you can find the rattle snakes. The risks are real out here. It is important to be mindful of your step.

Gnarly
The textures of rock and gnarled bark mirror one another.

Sunset and a Distant Storm
Another storm darkens the skies to the South. It's time to get out of the slot canyons. They are literally one of the worst places to be during heavy rainfall. The narrow cuts in the rock act as a funnel for fast moving run off.

Where Are the Marshmallows?
The passing storm provides for some serious fun as Fran and I take turns catching rainbows.

Burning Dusk
We are far from civilization as the sun sets the landscape ablaze in dusk's golden light. Sage Brush stretches for miles before giving way to a massive wall of rock.

Shelter
Storms have passed over every night since we have arrived. This seemed like a safe place to set up for the night.

Escalante Visitor Center
This is where you check in before heading off road. You give the rangers your personal information before wondering into the desert in case they need to file a missing persons report. This is also a great place to seek advice on the best times of day to hike and when potentially dangerous weather is expected.

Bryce Canyon
The land that encapsulates everything that is Utah into a 56 square mile amphitheater.

Waves of Rock
As I look over this land no thoughts, no words come to mind. There is just the slow steady breathe, I am here.

Wind Swept
Like the wind that weathered it's bark away. The grain of the tree seems to swirl and spin.

Passage in the Rock
Admittedly we get a little lost on our hike through Bryce Canyon. I have no remorse for this fact though. I often imagine I am still lost among the spires of stone.
hazleton travel photographerj.pecora photographyoutdoor photographerpennsylvania travel photographertravel photographertravel photographer Utah
Displaced
As we realize we may have taken a wrong turn on the trail, the words of a friend on the train play in my mind. I am not lost I am just displaced. I am not where I expected to be but whose to say this is not a good place to be?

Standing at the Abyss
Why does darkness so often scare us? Why is it that we are more likely to imagine something negative in the unknown? What would happen if you lived a life where you imagine all the positive possibilities beyond your current comfort zone?

Welcome to Zion
Zion National park is an oasis among the desert mountains in South West Utah. Towering red sandstone gives way to a lush green valley far below.

Hold on for Your Life
The hiking trails that scale the mountains of Zion National Park are very narrow in some places. With nothing between you and a very long drop it is wise to hang onto the chains.

Trail to Hidden Canyon
I know that look. That is the "Can we keep moving or did the camera become a permanent installation of your face?"

Tucked away in hidden canyon is an arch. A portal to another world.

Descending Clouds
More rain finds us in Zion. Fog descends upon the canyon. Peaks of jagged mountains hide beyond the veil of mist.

Welcome to Angels Landing
Many adventurers visit Angels Landing in Zion. For those afraid of hieghts this hike can be a true test of will. The narrow trail climbs to the peak of a mountain. In some places there is nothing between you and a 1,000 foot drop.

Zion Canyon
We begin our ascent of Angel's Landing, one of the most popular hikes in Zion National Park.

On the Precipice
On lookers scream in horror as two men break into an altercation. "I told you last night. If you eat that entire can of beans you are walking behind me tomorrow!"

Walter's Wiggles
Walter’s Wiggles are a series of 21 switchbacks carved into the face of the cliff. The trail was cut from a sheer drop of solid rock in 1926 and remains one of the park’s most spectacular construction wonders.

Last Chance to Turn Back
The park service uses this flat point on the mountain as a rest area. There is an outhouse provided, presumably to help travelers avoid involuntary bladder release when they realise how dangerous the rest of the hike is.
hazleton travel photographerj.pecora photographyoutdoor photographerpennsylvania travel photographertravel photographertravel photographer Utah
Hold on Tight
Remember those chains I mentioned earlier. This is a really good time to start using them. There are a few crazy people who scurry down the mountain like it is some kind of race totally ignoring the chains. I look at the view and I wonder what could possibly be the hurry.
hazleton travel photographerj.pecora photographyoutdoor photographerpennsylvania travel photographertravel photographertravel photographer Utah
White Cliff
I see trees growing on the mountain across from us. How they derive enough nutrients to grow up there is a wonder to me.

On the Road to Moab
After leaving Zion we hit the road towards Moab. Tonight will be the first night we spend indoors since living Salt Lake. That's right a room with a roof, a real bed and even a bathroom!

Red Moon Lodge
We have been camping for many nights so we decide to take up at a bed and breakfast in Moab. The Red Moon Lodge is an incredible place just outside of town.
