The Reflecting Pool
To be like water. Water contains the reflection of all things around it, yet it's property is never changed by the presence of that which it reflects.

Welcome to Deadhorse
Cowboy's once corralled wild horses by trapping them at the edge of Deadhorse Canyon. The healthy horses were taken and the undesirable ones were left behind.

Dead Horse Canyon
The edge of this cliff drops 2,000 feet to the Colorado River. Sadly we only scheduled Dead horse State park as a half day trip. After looking out over the Canyon lands I wish I had more time. Maybe a couple years to explore this immense ever changing landscape will be enough.

Wild Horses
Driving off road once again we come across wild horses grazing and frolicking in the desert brush. We are now on a 47 mile dirt road to Horse Shoe Canyon. What lies ahead is some of the most significant prehistoric art in North America.

Another Off Road Adventure
Horse Shoe Canyon is far out in the bush and not by accident. This canyon is home to one of the largest prehistoric art panels in North America. To avoid vandalism there are no paved roads that lead to this sacred place.

Descending
Following in the steps of our ancestors we begin our descent into the canyon.

Visions of the Past
One of the first rock panels one will find in Horse Shoe Canyon. The archeology of Horseshoe Canyon spans thousands of years of human history. Artifacts recovered from sites in this area date back as early as 9000-7000 BC

Protected
The canyon walls offer shelter from the elements. This protected environment is what makes it possible for thousand year old paintings to still be present today.

The Grand Gallery
This is only a segment of the entire panel. Measuring 15 feet high and 200 feet long the Grand gallery contains many life sized figures. Ghostly apparitions inhabit the entire expanse of the gallery. Their exact meaning is uncertain. What do you feel the artists may have been saying?

The Great Ghost
Standing ominously to the far right of the other figures in the Grand gallery is a figure known as the great ghost.

Deep in Thought
After taking in the messages that have been left behind I am left feeling humbled. Humankind has traveled these lands for thousands of years. They survived in a land which most present day people could not. Seeing the beautiful art that they left behind gives the impression that it was not a journey full of struggle but a journey of ever expanding spiritual connection to the land which gave rise to all of us.

Back Country
It looks like it may be the first clear calm night we have. No rain cover tonight, nows our chance to sleep under the stars.

Scorpion Weed
Not the first plant I have photographed to later find out that is potentially harmful. The hairs of the scorpion weed are known to cause rashes and skin irritation.

Welcome to the local watering hole. You won't find a more wretched hive of scum and villany.

Arches National Park
Home to over 2,000 natural arches. With so many natural oddities in one place it is fun to imagine that one is an interplanetary explorer on a strange desert planet.

Landscape Arch
Measuring at 290 feet, Landscape arch is the second longest arch in the world. Since 1991 three large slabs of rock have broken off of this delicate formation.

Want Me to Take Your Picture?
Another hiker enthusiasticly offers to take a photograph of us. I may be smiling but internally I repeat the mantra, please don't drop my camera, please don't drop my camera.

Last Stop, the Great Salt Lake
I am sad to say that this is our last day in Utah. Since we will be flying out of Salt Lake City we make a final stop at the Great Salt Lake.
hazleton travel photographerj.pecora photographyoutdoor photographerpennsylvania travel photographertravel photographertravel photographer Utah
Mystic Island
In the great Salt Lake there in an incredible and underrated place called Antelope Island. The state park on the island offers opportunity to float around in the high salinity water. After taking a dip you will want to shower unless you like the idea of being preserved like a mummy or piece of jerky.
hazleton travel photographerj.pecora photographyoutdoor photographerpennsylvania travel photographertravel photographertravel photographer Utah
This Water is.... Interesting.
It is almost a bit eerie. I don't know if it is the high salinity of the water or my imagination but I can not help but feel that the water looks and behaves a little differently here. It has a strong distinctive smell too. Imagine the smell of a beach amplified 3 fold.

Salt Flats
A withered white stump crawls out from a pungent pool of stagnating salt water. Brine flies swarm around me their buzzing drowns out all other sounds. This is the last image Captured on our adventures in Utah. I will return to this land again. The red sand stone calls ever to my spirit. The vast expanses inviting me to return to the silence.
